Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff has won a second term representing Georgia in the United States Senate, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins in one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 midterm elections. With 56 per cent of votes counted, Ossoff led Collins 63 per cent to 29 per cent, according to the Associated Press.

Ossoff, who has served in the Senate since 2021, campaigned on affordability, healthcare and government accountability. His victory means Democrats retain a Senate seat in a state that has shifted between parties in recent presidential elections. Georgia backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 before narrowly supporting Republican Donald Trump in 2024.

The state’s two Senate seats have been critical for Democratic power in the South, a region that leans heavily Republican. Ossoff will return to Washington alongside fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock, who won his seat in a 2021 special election. Both are considered potential candidates for higher office in the future.

In remarks after the result, Ossoff said the country had been stuck in narrow and self-interested politics and called for a return to principled governance. He thanked voters for what he described as a clear mandate for change.
