Al Qudra Lakes are a series of man-made water bodies in the Saih Al Salam desert, about 30 minutes' drive from downtown Dubai. Created as part of a wider conservation effort, the lakes have become a favourite escape for residents and visitors looking for quiet, open space, birdwatching and cycling without leaving the emirate.

What to expect

The site covers a large area with several interconnected lakes, the most famous being Love Lake, shaped like two interlocking hearts. The lakes are surrounded by sandy tracks, planted trees and reed beds, and are home to more than 170 bird species, including flamingos, swans, ducks, and migratory waders that stop over in winter. There are a few shaded bird hides where you can sit and watch without disturbing the wildlife.

There is no entrance fee and the area is open 24 hours a day, every day. However, there are no shops, cafés or restrooms on site, so bring everything you need.

Getting there

Al Qudra Lakes are best reached by car. From Dubai, take the Umm Suqeim Road (D63) towards Bab Al Shams and follow signs for Al Qudra. The journey takes around 30–40 minutes from the city centre. There is no public transport to the lakes, so a taxi or private car is the only option. Parking is freely available along the tracks near the lakes.

Things to do

  • Cycling: The 86-kilometre Al Qudra Cycling Track loops around the desert and passes by the lakes. You can bring your own bike or rent one from nearby outlets (though it's wise to check availability in advance). The track is open to cyclists of all levels, and the flat terrain makes it manageable for families.
  • Birdwatching: Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to spot birds, especially during the winter months when migratory species are present. Bring binoculars and a long lens if you have one.
  • Picnicking: The lakes are a popular spot for sunset picnics. There are no designated barbecue areas, but many visitors set up on the sand with a rug and a cool box. Remember to take all rubbish away with you.
  • Photography: The desert backdrop, the calm water and the flight of birds make for striking photographs, especially around golden hour. Love Lake is best appreciated from the air, but there is a raised viewing platform nearby for ground-level views.

Practical tips

  • Visit between October and April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant. Avoid midsummer afternoons.
  • Carry plenty of water and sun protection. There is little shade outside the bird hides.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore the tracks on foot.
  • Respect the wildlife: do not feed the birds or approach nests. Keep dogs on a lead and away from the water's edge.
  • Mobile phone signal is generally good, but it's wise to download offline maps before you set off.

Al Qudra Lakes offer a simple, low-cost way to experience the desert's quieter side. Whether you cycle the loop, watch flamingos wade at dusk, or simply sit and listen to the reeds rustle, the oasis feels far removed from the city's traffic and high-rises, even though it is only a short drive away.
