Khor Fakkan, a coastal town on the Gulf of Oman, is one of the UAE's most rewarding day trips or weekend escapes. Part of the emirate of Sharjah but separated from the rest by the Hajar Mountains, it offers a refreshing change of scenery: rugged peaks, a sweeping corniche and a slower pace than the big cities.

Whether you are driving from Dubai or staying in the northern emirates, Khor Fakkan rewards visitors with a mix of nature, history and local culture. Here is how to make the most of your visit.

Getting there

The drive from Dubai takes around 90 minutes to two hours, depending on your route. The most scenic option is the Sharjah–Khor Fakkan road (E102) through the mountains, which includes several tunnels and viewpoints. The older coastal road via Fujairah is longer but offers sea views for part of the journey.

Once in town, a private car is the easiest way to explore, as public transport is limited. Taxis are available for short trips, but hiring a car gives you freedom to visit the surrounding attractions.

Things to see and do

Stroll along the corniche. Khor Fakkan's waterfront is a pleasant place for a walk, especially in the late afternoon. The beach is clean and family-friendly, with calm waters for swimming during the cooler months.

Visit the Khor Fakkan Amphitheatre. Inspired by Roman design, this open-air venue sits at the foot of the mountains and is a striking landmark. Even when no events are on, the architecture and surrounding gardens are worth a look.

See the Al Rafisah Dam. A short drive inland, this reservoir is surrounded by date palms and offers kayaking and a lakeside walkway. The drive there follows a scenic wadi road past old villages and terraced farms.

Explore the old souq and heritage area. Near the centre, you will find a small traditional market and restored buildings that give a sense of the town's past as a trading and fishing port.

Hike or picnic in the mountains. Several marked trails start near the town, including routes to old watchtowers and viewpoints. The cooler months from November to March are best for outdoor activity.

Best time to visit

The ideal season is winter, from November to March, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for walking and hiking. Summer is very hot and humid, so outdoor activities are best avoided.

Weekends (Friday and Saturday) can be busy with local visitors, so if you prefer quiet, aim for a weekday morning. Sunsets over the Gulf of Oman are a highlight and best enjoyed from the corniche or a high viewpoint.

Tips for your trip

  • Dress modestly in public areas, especially when visiting heritage sites or the souq. Beachwear is fine on the beach but cover up elsewhere.
  • Bring water and sun protection, even in winter. The sun can be strong, and there is little natural shade on some trails.
  • Check road conditions before driving into the mountains, especially after rain, as wadis can flood.
  • Respect local customs and ask before photographing people. The town is conservative by nature, and a friendly approach goes a long way.

Khor Fakkan offers a genuine glimpse of the UAE's east coast: dramatic landscapes, a relaxed atmosphere and a history tied to the sea. Whether you come for a few hours or a full weekend, it is a journey well worth making.
